Eyelash Extensions – Are They Worth It?

Eyelash extensions are gorgeous. Mascara is great, but it can only do so much especially if you have very sparse lashes to begin with. Fake lashes are great too but most people struggle with application. While it’s so much easier to wake up with a full set of lashes, these beautiful lashes don’t come cheap with the average cost of these extensions ranging anywhere from $150 to $400 dollars; But are they worth it?

The Procedure

The synthetic eyelashes are glued onto your real eyelashes. The extensions are made from real human hair,  mink, silk, faux fox and faux mink. The real human hair lashes are more expensive while the faux mink lashes are on the lower end of the price range. Most people agree that there are very little differences between the materials.

You can choose the length of the extensions and also the amount of curl. The “J” curl gives you a natural, more awake look. The “C” curl will give you a more dramatic look. You can also do a combination of both. A popular option is getting the “J” curl in the middle of your eye and the “C” curl in the outer corners.

The actual process of getting lash extensions doesn’t hurt. The glue contains formaldehyde, which rarely causes inflammation. If you have sensitive skin and are worried about the glue, the technicians will do a patch test for you. A full set of lashes can take up to two hours to apply. The extensions last a year, but you should go in once a month for touch-ups.

After the Procedure

  • You can’t get the lashes wet for 24 hours.
  • No more rubbing your eyes, it will cause breakage in both the extensions and your real lashes.
  • No oil-based cleansers or heavy eye cream.
  • Do not pull them off; it will take off your real lashes as well.
  • It’s best to avoid mascara because it can make the extensions look crusty.
  • Don’t drag liquid eyeliner along your lash line

If you are curious about getting lash extensions, I recommend trying them before special occasion. If you love them, you can keep maintaining them. If you hate them, they will fall off or you can get them removed.

There are also more affordable options available if extensions are too much for your budget. You can invest in a lash conditioning serum or you can lift and tint your eyelashes.
